When we are authentic, there is NOBODY exactly like us. We aren’t a cheap imitation of someone else. This is attractive and fascinating to a lot of people, but not everyone.
If you are truly authentic you will not please everyone! In fact, there will be some people who don’t like you at all. There are many deep, dark psychology secrets that may explain this phenomenon, but who really cares about those? All I care about is the fact that when you try to be everything to everyone you become nothing to nobody. Kind of like the restaurant with the menu the size of a small novel that has good yet forgettable food that no one really talks about. When we try to appeal to everyone we become that restaurant in our own industry. Good, but not great, and no one talks about us.
Our brain has the task of filtering out billions of thoughts, sounds, sights, etc. so that we pay attention to the things that really matter. It has become really good at filtering and ignoring anything that is the same or average. When we are different we can’t be filtered and have to be dealt with. There are a ton of people in this world, and whether they know it or not, they’re looking to bond with others. When we act in an authentic manner we offer a surface that people can bond to instead of some slick, fabricated, shiny facade that nothing could ever stick to.
Don’t be afraid to have a few people not like you! Actually, if this is the case, you may be on the right track. In order to do this though, do as my mentor Frank Sovinsky said, “You can care, just not that much.” When you are different, you put out a version that no one else has, completely unique to YOU. No competition exists.
